Lactose Intolerance

Lactose Intolerance in the Morning

For many people the feelings of lactose intolerance in the morning can be more severe than they appear to be during other times of the day. There can be a few reasons why this may be the case and hopefully by the end of this article you will better understand why this may be.

Experiencing the unpleasant symptoms of lactose intolerance in the morning can be a regular, if not daily event for many people. It may seem that even before a glass of milk has even been touched the familiar cramps and churning sensations can be upon you.

What may provide the first of a few explanations for this phenomenon is your metabolism. During sleep, your body's metabolism slows down immensely. Upon waking up from sleep, you can often find that things you consumed the day before have barely been metabolised since you fell asleep. Also accounting for the fact your body can take some time to wake up and begin functioning in the morning, the effects of having lactose in your system can weigh more heavily on you in the morning than later on in the day. Tying in with this explanation is if you have been in a deep sleep, your stomach may have been doing cartwheels but since you weren't conscious, you simply haven't realised, and it feels as if the symptoms only started upon waking, when in fact they have been persisting throughout sleep.

Another explanation is your unconscious actions whilst you are awake. Think very carefully about what you do in the morning what could be triggering these symptoms. One example is, you may for instance drink tea or coffee every day, adding milk, or have a splash of milk with your cereal. As obvious as this may sound, many people overlook these things simply because they are so familiar they are almost done unconsciously without thought.

One final reason why you may appear to be experiencing symptoms of lactose intolerance in the morning is psychological reasons. This isn't as far out as it sounds, as psychology can play a big part in many recurring problems. If you have been waking up and having gastrointestinal issues every morning for a long while, it can sometimes be made worse by the fact you are subconsciously expecting to have them, therefore inducing them on a subconscious level. If you do some research into the psychology of humans you will learn the subconscious mind can often control the body far more than the conscious mind, and this train of thought may be of use to many people suffering what they believe to be lactose intolerance symptoms.
