How to Prevent Lactose IntoleranceAs we discussed in the previous article, lactose is a sugar which is present in all dairy products produced by animals or humans. Lactose intolerance describes our bodies varying degrees of inability to break down this sugar into glucose. Most adults in the world are lactose intolerant to some degree, and the effects of lactose intolerance can be both uncomfortable and embarrassing. Let us first say there is no cure for lactose intolerance, per se, however there are preventative measures you can take to avoid suffering from the effects of lactose intolerance, and that is what this article is going to be all about. Given the widespread use of dairy products – which can be found in almost everything – avoiding lactose can become a big challenge, and some trial and error may be involved. One sure way to avoid lactose is to create all of your food from scratch using raw ingredients, therefore avoiding lactose. This may sound like too much work, but it really isn't when you think about it. Make a list of all your favourite meals, the ones you usually eat every week. Also make a list of any confectionaries you may eat, such as cookies, shortbread biscuits and so forth. Now try and find some good recipes which will enable you to create your favourite foods yourself by substituting ‘milk' for a lactose free variety found in most stores. The good thing about this method is not only do you avoid lactose altogether and still get to enjoy all of your favourite meals, but you can vary the quantity of each food you make and store it. You never know, you may just find this to be an extremely rewarding experience! Of course, if you don't relish the idea of having to make all of your own food yourself, we have more tips coming up in part 2 of how to prevent lactose intolerance from blighting your life. |
